How to Use Our Codeword Solver
What is a Codeword Puzzle?
A codeword puzzle (also called a code-cracker) is a type of word puzzle similar to a crossword, but with an important difference. In a codeword, each letter of the alphabet is replaced by a number from 1 to 26. Your task is to figure out which letter corresponds to each number and solve the puzzle.
Unlike crosswords, which provide clues for each word, codewords require you to use pattern recognition, letter frequency analysis, and logical deduction to decode the puzzle. Once you discover a letter's code, that letter appears in all the corresponding numbered squares throughout the puzzle.
Basic Instructions
Enter your pattern
Type known letters in their correct positions and use underscores (_) for unknown letters. For example, if you know the first letter is 'J' but don't know the remaining letters in a 7-letter word, enter: J______
Click the "Search" button
Generate possible word matches that fit your pattern.
Review the results
Explore the matching words to find potential solutions for your codeword puzzle.
Example Patterns
j_n_p__
- Could match "jumper", "juniper", etc.sa_sa_e
- Could match "sausage", "salvage", etc.t_r_ip
- Could match "turnip", "tarzip", etc.
Advanced Features
Remove Letters
If you've determined certain letters don't appear in your word (perhaps you've decoded them elsewhere in the puzzle), enter them in the "Remove" field. This will filter out words containing those letters.
- Example: If you know the letters X, Q, Z, and V don't appear in your word, add them to the Remove field.
- Limit: You can remove up to 10 letters.
Vowel Indicator (#)
Use the hash symbol (#) in your pattern to indicate positions where you suspect a vowel. This is particularly useful when you notice repeated patterns that might be vowels.
- Example:
b#y__#
would search for words where the 2nd and 6th positions contain vowels (a, e, i, o, u), such as "boyish".
Results Categories
Our solver organizes results into helpful categories:
- Unique Letters - Words where each letter appears exactly once. These are often easier to solve in codewords because each number corresponds to a unique letter.
- Duplicated Letters - Words containing repeated letters. These listings show how many times certain letters repeat, helping you identify patterns in your puzzle.
Common Examples
Example 1: Partial Word with Known Letters
- Pattern:
t_ff##
- Description: This searches for words starting with 't', having 'ff' in positions 3-4, and vowels in positions 5-6.

Example 2: Multiple Unknown Letters
- Pattern:
j_____e
- Description: This searches for 7-letter words starting with 'j' and ending with 'e'.
- Potential matches: "justice", "jubilee", "jasmine", etc.
Example 3: Combined Features
- Pattern:
b_y__#
- Remove: axtz
- Description: This searches for words starting with 'b', having 'y' in position 3, a vowel in position 6, and excluding a, x, t, and z.
- Potential matches: "buying", "boyish", etc.
Why Our Tool is Designed Specifically for Codewords
Unlike crossword solvers, our tool accounts for the unique logic of codewords:
- In codewords, once a letter is identified, that same letter must appear in all places with the same number.
- The tool considers letter frequency and common patterns in English words.
- We provide categories that help you identify repeating patterns crucial for solving codewords.
